Artist Statement
My work is an attempt to explore the themes of female identity and the representation of women in art and society. My approach is a curation of found images sourced from historical paintings often juxtaposed with contemporary erotic imagery, both depicting idealized beauty. Appropriating historical works painted by men allows me to reinterpret and reclaim narratives, exploring the concept of the male gaze and offering a new perspective on traditional depictions of women. My technique of squeezing paint out of frosting bags generates a messy craft-like playfulness. This along with placing them in a colorful scene with cute imagery and recreating them in a naïve style gives new meaning to the original representations. In essence, my art becomes an exploration of the concept of women as subject and makers, challenging perceptions and inviting contemplation on the intricate interplay between female identity, societal representation, and the enduring influence of historical art on our collective consciousness.
